attitude of gratitude

I'm very glad that I asked people to share some of the things for which they're grateful this Thanksgiving. I'm including a dozen replies below (I'd include more, but I want this to be a reasonable length.)

What really strikes me is the degree to which people seem to choose gratitude.

Not all the experiences you'll see people talk about below are things that you'd characterize on a whim as positive—job loss, health issues, even death. It was very cathartic for me to read these, and how people viewed them in a way that offered an opportunity for thankfulness.

By the way, I had probably 100 replies directly from readers, plus more in the comments section. I'm going to keep that open and running so people can read those as well, and add to them if you'd like.

Many of you expressed gratitude for this newsletter, but I edited it out of most replies after the first one; otherwise it read as if I were fishing for compliments! But I heard you, and I appreciate your kind words!

OK, our list begins below this Thanksgiving-appropriate stock photo:

Health
"I'm grateful for the hospital staff who saved my life from the heart attack I suffered on October 26.
I'm grateful for my friends and sister who all pitched in to lighten my load. I'm grateful for my cat, Mia who missed me terribly in the 3 days I was away.Basically, I'm grateful to God and the life I have been given and for the second chance to get things right.
Greg Colley

(OK, for the rest of these I’m going to edit out the parts where readers were nice enough to express gratitude for this newsletter. I appreciate it, but it might look like I was fishing for compliments. There were a lot of you though! — Bill)

Water
"After working on Nicaraguan water projects for two different years with El Porvenir, my husband and I never looked at having hot, potable water available at the turn of a faucet the same way. What a luxury!"
Susan Skinnner
Transformation
"I am grateful to be clean. I just celebrated 18 years on November 11th.
Beforehand, I was a violent criminal with 28+ years of substance abuse. After I finally asked for help and became a productive responsible member of society, I gained sole custody of my child. I put her through school and college with no loans, and no help from anyone.
I have repaired torn relationships with friends and family and developed new ones built on mutual trust and love. I have learned to live with dignity, grace and purpose. I could actually write a book on gratitude, as the list goes on and on. For that, I am forever grateful."

A baby! (and a house!)
"What I’m grateful for this year: A now-9-month-old baby after years of infertility and a pregnancy loss; and becoming a first-time homebuyer! Looking forward to seeing other submissions! Thank you for collecting these!"
Lauren Robeson
Unexpected opportunity
"It may sound strange to say I am grateful for my mother’s dementia, but it has allowed us to have a relationship that we never would have had otherwise.
Our relationship has always been tumultuous, but with dementia, all the inhibitions and filters are gone. There is no tension, no arguing, no bitterness about the past, only love. I am able to care for her with all of the love and support I can muster. She is no longer critical of me or my decisions.
We have a wonderful loving relationship and I am grateful to have this time with her. Thank you for the opportunity to share this sentiment."

53 Years
"My wife passed away in late September after 53 wonderful years of marriage. Each day I focus on the positive and how grateful I am to have had a life long partner to share our joys, our dreams, our love and disappointments. How lucky I was to have built our life together.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. May you be as fortunate as I have been."
Paul Scott
The bright side of being laid off
"I am grateful for my layoff. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, I took medical leave from my fulfilling corporate career. Unfortunately, when I returned, I was reassigned to a different role that required very different skills, and that I grew to dislike.
Being laid off, although it was unexpected, freed me from toxic office politics. Now, despite the uncertainty and reduced income, I'm happily stress-free, launching a business of my own (a bakery!) in a world where corporate conformity is no longer a pressure."

Witnessing love
"Watching my aunt pass away, with my uncle holding her hand was probably the most loving thing I have witnessed.
He adored her, cared for her for well over 50 years, and still smiles every day because he had her all that time. I am so grateful to have witnessed their final moments together. Somehow my completeness or my soul is richer, fuller, and more comfortable having experienced this. I feel chosen and my gratitude is ever deeper for this."
Terry Freeser
A fulfilling career
"I retired two weeks ago. I am grateful that I LOVED my job! The opportunities to grow, to affect change, to work with amazing people over 30 years has been awesome."
Lynne Hamp
Health, job, family, and treatment
"I'm grateful for my health, my job and my family. My boyfriend is battling cancer, so I'm grateful for his treatment going smoothly and I wish his recovery to be fast."
Gabriela Almeida
Alive, and a coincidence
"I’m grateful to be alive, and finally to have something in common with an NFL player.
On January 2nd, I had a heart attack, 'like' Damar Hamlin. [For those who don't remember, Hamlin is the Buffalo Bills player who suffered a cardiac arrest during Monday Night Football (on the same day as our reader): January 2.]
I was 67 years old. I had recently passed a full physical with flying colors. I was on meds at the time, workin out hard (cardio) 5-days a week.
Like Damar, I’m looking forward to enjoying the holidays with family and friends. (Side note: It was a bit surreal that night in the hospital, watching the NFL on TV, as the events unfolded.)"
Al Buscaino
Everything
"At 76, I am grateful to be alive and able to work out twice a day, intense exercise in the morning and one hour walks in the afternoon along with occasional bike rides and swimming. (I say this after being almost killed in an attack in 2009.)
I am grateful for a healthy wife, also in her 70's, with whom I travel the world.
I am grateful for 5 great kids and 12 grandchildren.
I am grateful for being bold enough to quit an equity partnership with Big Law at 53 to join a client (now best friend) to start an Internet business and get out of the 60 hour a week billing treadmill.
I am grateful to enjoy trying cases and still have the mental and physical stamina to do so.
I am grateful for a strong supportive church community and family (my brother in law is the Pastor) committed to Christ's teachings to love one another and (try) to make the world a better place for all.
Turns out to be a longer list than I thought.
Have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving."
Bill Curphey

Thank you again to everyone who sent me a message; I wish I could include more but this is already pretty long. There are more in the comments section.

I'm taking off Thanksgiving and the day after, but we'll return on Monday morning. See you then and thanks again!

7 other things worth knowing today

  • Here's something economic to be grateful for: U.S. drivers can expect the cheapest gas prices on Thanksgiving day since 2020. The national average for gallon of regular gas was about $3.31 on Monday, 25 cents cheaper than a month ago and 36 cents lower than the same period in 2022, according to AAA. (CNBC)
  • Concerns about certain crimes are at their highest levels in decades, causing Americans to isolate themselves from their communities, according to new polling. A recent Gallup poll found that 28% of Americans worry frequently or occasionally that they will be murdered, and 40% of Americans nationwide are afraid to walk within a mile of their homes alone at night, highest since 1993. (Miami Herald)
  • Sales of previously owned homes were 4.1% lower in October compared with September, running at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 3.79 million units, according to the National Association of Realtors. It was the slowest sales pace since August 2010. Analysts were expecting a smaller drop, to 3.9 million units. Sales were down 14.6% year-over-year. (CNBC)
  • Uber is imagining a world where people don’t own cars. So they paid 58 Australians to leave theirs at home for four weeks. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Uber ride share was the biggest winner from the trial, with trips increasing 450% over the course of the trial (up from just 1%). The biggest absolute increase in trip numbers was walking. (Forbes)
  • Target is testing a new self-checkout policy as retailers are finding the cashier-less technology can put off customers. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer. Customers buying more than that are required to use full-service lanes with cashiers. A Target spokesperson said the test was designed to shorten wait times and “better understand” shoppers’ preferences. (CNN)
  • Millennials say they need $525,000 a year to be happy. A Nobel prize winner's research shows they're not wrong. (Business Insider)
